Chula Vista Advances Affordable Housing Initiatives

Chula Vista is making significant strides in addressing affordable housing needs. The city has been awarded $8.61 million in Homekey+ funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development to convert the former Palomar Motel into permanent supportive housing. This project aims to provide studio apartments for very low-income residents experiencing or at risk of homelessness, including units designated for veterans. Mayor John McCann emphasized the city’s commitment to creating long-term housing solutions for those in need. The project is expected to be completed by November 2026, with full occupancy anticipated by January 2027. Additionally, the city has received a $500,000 grant from the state’s Local Housing Trust Fund program, matched by a city contribution, totaling $1 million to be invested in constructing new affordable housing through a competitive selection process. These efforts reflect Chula Vista’s proactive approach to expanding access to safe, affordable housing for its residents.
